Pasadena-based Casa Treatment Center, one of the first treatment centers in Southern California designed specifically to meet the needs of women in recovery, hosted an art showing featuring artwork created by women in its programs over the May 4 weekend.

The goal of the project was to help women in treatment build confidence, reduce depression and anxiety, and learn healthy ways to cope with life’s challenges and negative emotions, according to a statement released by the center.

Research has shown that art therapy provides participants with a learning environment where they are able to gain self-awareness and develop problem-solving skills.

“The majority of women suffering from substance abuse have also experienced trauma,” the press release said. “Creating art can also help alleviate feelings of rejection, abandonment and depression and can increase women’s confidence and self-worth.”

The art show was supported by the Department of Arts and Culture, which funds arts-based programs at non-arts social service and social justice organizations, including nonprofits and municipalities. The program aims to make arts services available to underserved communities and encourage the integration of arts in cross-sector work at local organizations.

Casa Treatment Center has been providing addiction treatment exclusively to women in Los Angeles County since 1967, focusing on the life-altering experiences of women from diverse backgrounds and providing individualized treatment plans specifically designed to address addiction, trauma, and mental health disorders. The center has worked for system change in the field of addiction treatment.

“Drug and alcohol dependence knows no boundaries and affects individuals regardless of gender, race, religion, profession, or social class,” Casa said in the statement.

The center serves hundreds of adult women and their families each year in its residential, outpatient, and sober living programs, offering individualized treatment plans and therapeutic approaches tailored to meet their unique needs and goals.
