Chief Sanchez Asks FBI to Consider Investigating McDade Shooting

Pasadena Chief of Police Phillip Sanchez has requested the Federal Bureau of Investigations consider conducting an independent review of the officer involved shooting that occurred on March 24, 2012, which resulted in the death of Kendrec McDade.

“The Federal Bureau of Investigations offers another independent level of review,” said Chief Sanchez.

Pasadena police shot McDade, a 19 year old college student from Azusa, as they responded to a 911 armed robbery radio call and pursued McDade up Sunset Ave. north of Orange Grove Blvd. The officers reported they thought McDade was reaching for a weapon inside his pants waistband. No weapon was found at the scene of the shooting.

It was later determined by police that the 911 caller had lied and that neither McDade or another suspect involved in the alleged robbery was armed.

Earlier, on March 27, Sanchez asked the Office of Independent Review Group (OIR) to conduct its own investigation into the McDade shooting. OIR is a Los Angeles Sheriff’s Department watchdog agency which has investigated past Pasadena police shootings.

Additionally, both the Pasadena Police Department and the Los Angeles County District Attorney’s Office have initiated investigations.
