City Council Recognizes Women’s History Month

The City Council issued a proclamation recognizing March as Women’s History Month during its meeting on Monday.

The proclamation read by Mayor Victor Gordo recognizes the role and contributions of women to the city of Pasadena and to the society throughout history.

“Whereas, women of every race, class and ethnic background have made historic contributions to the growth and strength of Pasadena in countless recorded and unrecorded ways.”

“Whereas, women play a critical economic, cultural and social role in every sphere of life in Pasadena.”

The proclamation stated that despite the participation of women in all facets of society, their role has consistently been “undervalued” in the literature, leadership, teaching and study of American history — thus, it is fitting that the city “recognize their numerous accomplishments.”

Beverley Morgan-Sandoz, Chair of Pasadena’s Commission on the Status of Women, lauded the City Council for its action.

The commissioner said in recognizing women of the past, the city is laying a foundation for women and girls to achieve today.

“At some point, we would likely not need a Women’s History Month, that we would not need a specific time for recognizing the contributions of a group of people who represent more than 50 percent of our population but that time is not now.”

“So the commission applauds the action of the mayor and the City Council in recognizing the contributions of women through this Women’s History Month proclamation,” Morgan-Sandoz said.
