Average Number of Weekly New Pasadena COVID-19 Cases Drops 28%

City officials reported 106 total cases this past weekend as new local coronavirus cases continued to decrease. 

On Saturday, the city reported 50 cases and two additional fatalities. On Sunday, the city reported 56 cases.

“We are experiencing much lower cases than what we were reporting a week ago,” said city Public Information Officer Lisa Derderian. “A week ago, our 7-day case average was 84.3 and now it’s 60.7 cases per day. Both of the deaths were community deaths.”

Cases being treated in Huntington Hospital’s intensive care unit (ICU) also continued to decrease. On Sunday, the hospital reported 27 cases being treated in the ICU and 149  patients battling COVID-19 in the hospital. 

Gov. Gavin Newsom lifted a state stay-at-home order last week and almost immediately local restaurants were able to open outdoor dining.

L.A. County health officials are cautioning residents to remain vigilant in the fight against the virus.

“We really do need to be cautious as we move forward, given we have a major sporting event,” county Health Officer Dr. Muntu Davis said of the Super Bowl game between the Tampa Bay Buccaneers and the Kansas City Chiefs on Feb. 7. 

“We’ve seen lots of people together shouting, yelling, screaming during the excitement of a game. We want to make sure that as we do these re-openings we can see the impact, and as we move forward if things continue to get better we may be able to change some of the restrictions that are there. But right now we have to ease into these re-openings,” Davis said.
