City Spends $64,000 for Sidewalk Repairs

Up to this point the city has spent $64,375 for the completed sidewalk repairs of 87 properties under its Pilot Sidewalk Repair Program.

The property owners contributed about $95,550 as their share for the repair of the properties that totaled 13,000 square feet of sidewalk.

186 applications were submitted to the Department of Public Works by homeowners under the city’s Pilot Sidewalk Repair Partnership Program, 126 of which were approved. 33 more properties are set to be repaired.

The Program enables private property owners to have 50 percent payment incentives from the City on the cost of sidewalk repairs in areas damaged by City street trees.

The program started in July 2013. Damages to sidewalks caused by privately-owned trees or other circumstances are not included in the project.

Under the terms of the pilot program, the City will match 50 percent of the cost of sidewalk repairs, up to a maximum of $1,000 per parcel. Income-qualified residents may receive up to 70 percent of repair costs, also up to $1,000 per parcel. Income qualifications are based on the Pasadena Water and Power’s Electronic Assistance Program.

The Department said that to be eligible for the incentives, the property owner must not be “engaged in the sale of their property and/or involved in a building permit process for property improvements valued at $20,000 or more.”

Interested property owners should submit an application to the Department of Public Works to qualify for the program. The Department said it will inspect the sidewalk to determine the applicant’s qualifications, conditions and project limits. Once approved, the City will then send an agreement to the property owner showing the costs of repair, and the reconstruction will be scheduled once the invoice has been paid in full.

The Department added that the City is responsible for permits and negotiation with the contractors.
