City Won’t Allow Parade Route Camping on New Year’s Eve

Camping out for the Rose Parade normally gets underway on New Year's Eve - but not this year.

It definitely will be an unusual New Year’s Eve this year along the Rose Parade route. With the “Never on a Sunday” rule pushing the festivities to January 2, city officials will not allow any camping out for the parade until Sunday night, January 1, according to a notice on the City’s website.

“Overnight camping for the parade is permitted only on the night of Sunday, January 1, 2017,” the notice says. “Sidewalk positions may be maintained along the parade route beginning on Jan. 1, 2017. All persons and property, such as blankets, chairs and personal items, must remain on the curb until 11 p.m.”

At 11 p.m., parade spectators are expected to move out to a blue “Honor Line” painted on the street about six feet from the curb, which becomes the front row during the parade. No one is allowed closer to the curb beyond the Honor Line.

In a press conference Wednesday, Pasadena Chief of Police Phillip Sanchez said officers will be out on New Year’s Eve to ensure that no one tries to camp out early ahead of the rest of the crowd. Anyone violating the rule will be reprimanded, though Sanchez says he does not expect any serious problems along the route before New Year’s Day, the eve of the Rose Parade.

Other than camping too early, Pasadena does offer a variety of other activities for New Year’s Eve and the New Year so you could stay away from the parade route until it’s time.

At the Pasadena Convention Center at 300 E. Green Street, Live on Green Pasadena kicks off on December 30 through January 1. The festival will include food, drinks, and performances by over a dozen live bands. City visitors as well as residents of all ages can join the fun events related to the festival.

The float organizers will also welcome volunteers to help decorate the floats for the Rose Parade. Decorating will take place from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Saturday, at the Rose Palace, at 835 S. Raymond Avenue. The event is open for the whole family.

Over at the Pasadena City College Robinson Stadium, the marching bands taking part in the Rose Parade will showcase their performance starting Friday afternoon until Saturday. Cost of entry is $15 per person, free for children five and under.

Club 54, located at 54 E. Colorado Blvd., will host its annual Club 54 New Year’s Eve party on Saturday night, with doors opening at 8 p.m. Tickets are $30.

Meanwhile, Magnolia’s House, located at 492 S. Lake Avenue, will host its annual New Year’s Eve celebration on Saturday, December 31, starting at 9 p.m.
Those who wish to listen and dance to some good ol’ classic rock can come and check out Queen Nation’s concert at The Rose, 245 E. Green Street in Pasadena. Queen Nation considers themselves as the world’s largest Queen tribute band.
Tickets can be purchased online through www.eventbrite.com/e/nye-party-with-queen-nation-tickets-29767416143?aff=es2.

Doors open at 6 p.m.
