The Los Angeles County Board of Supervisors on Tuesday unanimously passed a motion directing the County’s Chief Executive Officer to explore the feasibility of establishing an office to coordinate the County’s collaboration with houses of worship and other faith-based organizations.

According to the motion authored by Supervisors Kathryn Barger and Janice Hahn, the proposed office would serve as a liaison, connecting County initiatives with faith-based organizations. The office would also provide technical assistance to facilitate business interactions between houses of worship and the County and establish uniform guidelines countywide, addressing concerns related to church-state separation.

“Faith-based entities are essential and trusted partners that can quickly help the County reach those who are most in need,” Supervisor Barger said. “I’m convinced that when we work together, the County is able to support and uplift communities more efficiently.”

Supervisor Hahn added faith- and community-based organizations are trusted parts of the communities they serve.

“As a safety net for our most vulnerable residents, the County’s work is complimented and enriched by the collaboration of these groups, and I look forward to deepening our engagement with them through this office,” she said. “It’s a natural partnership and one we haven’t taken enough advantage of.”

The motion underscored the Pasadena Clergy Community Coalition’s model that has effectively reduced administrative burdens and eased insurance requirements. Notably, the Coalition played a role in assisting Pasadena in reimbursing local faith-based organizations that provided shelter for individuals experiencing homelessness during inclement weather.

Supervisor Barger emphasized the essential role of faith-based entities as trusted partners capable of swiftly reaching those in need.

“This is about standing shoulder to shoulder with the organizations that are already serving their communities and working smarter,” she said.

The motion mandates the Chief Executive Officer to report back to the Board of Supervisors within 90 days; the report will include a recommendation for the most suitable department to house the envisioned office.
