Community Invited to Name Pasadena’s Newest Park

Construction of Pasadena’s newest park in the Playhouse District is underway, and the city is reaching out to the community to help name it.

A groundbreaking ceremony for the new park along Union Street, between El Molino and Oak Knoll avenues, was held late last month.

The city will be accepting recommendations for the park’s official name via an online survey through Aug. 20, officials said in a written statement.

Once a preliminary list is compiled, a second survey will be published to allow members of the public to vote for their favorites.

“Votes will be tallied and presented to the Recreation and Parks Commission for discussion and, subsequently, a recommendation of the park’s official name will be presented to City Council for its consideration,” according to the city statement.

To be considered, suggested names should follow the guidelines outlined in Pasadena’s Public Park and Recreation Facility Naming Policy.

Criteria include a geographical location of the park, natural or geological features near the park, cultural or historical significance, or a name of a person “who has made a significant contribution to the community, country, state, or field of parks and recreation,” the statement said.

The park was scheduled to be completed in May, city officials said.

It includes open space, a shaded children’s playground, public restrooms, 48 parking spaces, and a dog run.
