Pasadena police canceled the pursuit of an armed robber Monday night after the suspect’s driving became so erratic officers feared the chase might endanger the public.
The pursuit ensued after the suspect reportedly walked out of the Home Depot store in the 2800 block of East Walnut Street without paying for merchandise, according to Lt. Sean Dawkins.
When challenged to produce a receipt for the items, the suspect reportedly pulled a handgun from his waistband and waved it in the air, Dawkins said.
Shoppers and store employees ran and took cover. The suspect ran to a vehicle with the merchandise and left the parking lot, driving east on Walnut street, Dawkins said.
Pasadena police units allocated the vehicle and gave chase. A short time later, due to the driver’s erratic driving, ground units backed off and the Pasadena police helicopter continued to follow the vehicle, Dawkins said.
A short time after that, the suspect’s driving became so dangerous the helicopter pursuit was also canceled.
Dawkins said detectives will investigate the case. Authorities reported that the suspect made off with power tools and a generator.
