Pasadena Planning Commissioner Jason Lyon announced new organizational endorsements in the District 7 race for the City Council.

Lyon’s campaign has been endorsed by the International Union of Operating Engineers Local Union No. 12 and the Stonewall Democratic Club.

“I am deeply honored to have earned the confidence and support of the Operating Engineers and the Stonewall Democrats,” Lyon said. “Their endorsements add momentum to the campaign and bring so much to the broad coalition of support we’re building.”

According to its website, I.U.O.E. Local 12 was formed in 1939 to ensure fair wages, excellent training, and job opportunities for highly skilled construction professionals.  Local 12 has been headquartered in Pasadena since 1988.

Lyon is hoping to capture the seat being vacated by Vice Mayor Andy Wilson.  Former Planning Commissioner Ciran Hadjian has also announced intentions to run for District 7. Candidates can pull papers on Monday, Feb. 14.

In a statement, Operating Engineers Local 12 stated, “We support Jason Lyon for Pasadena City Council because we trust him to stand up for all residents and working people. He has the background and drive to deliver the results we need and to unite Pasadena.”

“Stonewall Democratic Club is proud to endorse Jason Lyon for Pasadena City Council,” said club President Alex Mohajer. “We were impressed with Jason’s thoughtful discussion of the pressing issues facing our region, particularly regarding homelessness and affordable housing, and his emphasis on building a broad coalition of diverse perspectives. And of course, we are excited that he stands to become Pasadena’s first openly LGBTQ city council member. Jason is a promising new leader in our community.”

According to its website, Stonewall Democratic Club is the nation’s oldest Democratic Party organization established for gay, lesbian, bisexual, and transgender individuals and their straight allies who are committed to achieving equality for all.

Last month, Lyon’s campaign announced endorsements from elected and appointed officials, including Senator Jack Scott, L.A. County Assessor Jeff Prang, and Pasadena Community College Trustees Sandra Chen Lau and Tammy Silver, among others.

Lyon’s campaign website also posted community endorsements today from education and civil rights advocate Alma Stokes, former Sierra Madre Mayor and now Pasadena resident John Harabedian, and Cal State L.A. Educational Leadership doctoral program director Dr. Albert Jones.

Lyon has served in leadership capacities for Young & Healthy, the San Gabriel Valley Economic Partnership, Planned Parenthood Pasadena San Gabriel Valley, and All Saints Church.

In 2017, Mayor Terry Tornek appointed Lyon to Pasadena’s Historic Preservation Commission. Council Member Wilson tapped Lyon to join the Planning Commission in 2019. Lyon currently serves as Vice Chair of both the Planning Commission and the city’s Board of Zoning Appeals.

Lyon is a partner with Pasadena’s historic Hahn & Hahn LLP, the law firm founded in 1899. He practices complex commercial litigation with an emphasis on partnership disputes and fraud matters.

Lyon lives in the Madison Heights neighborhood with his husband, Tim Hartley, a real estate agent, and their two sons.
