Council to Consider Million-Dollar Renovation of La Pintoresca Park

The Pasadena City Council on Monday will review and possibly award a $1.3 million contract to Camarillo-based Civic Construction Associates for the renovation of La Pintoresca Park, a project which will include numerous park elements as well as site drainage improvements.

Specifically, the renovation project will include demolition of the existing splash pad and installation of a new pad, demolition of the existing skate park and installation of a new one, resurfacing of the basketball court, and construction of a new shade structure over existing playground equipment.

The project also includes remodeling of the interiors of existing bathrooms, installation of new light poles at the skate park and basketball court, new fencing along the south and east sides of the skate park and basketball court, construction of a new wall at the skate park and along the east portion of the basketball court, and regrading of the grass area to improve site drainage near the library.

Civic Construction Associates is one of 12 contractors that submitted bids in response to project plans and specifications advertised in a notice inviting bids on Oct. 29. The contract amount includes a base bid of $1,166,564 with a contingency allowance of $133,436, according to an agenda report prepared for the council by the Public Works Department.

According to the report, several of the park’s amenities have reached the end of their useful lives. The skate park and basketball court were last renovated in 2008 and the splash pad was installed in 2005.

“Over their service life, these facilities were greatly utilized and eventually worn to the point where renovation and/or replacement is necessary,” the report said. “To promote the usage of the playground during hot weather, a shade structure covering the play elements will also be installed.”

Planning for the park renovation project started in August 2019 when the city entered into a planning and design services agreement with David Evans and Associates, Inc. The resulting plans were presented during a series of community meetings and at least two presentations before the city’s Recreation and Parks Commission.

The Public Works Department anticipates construction work to begin in January and could be completed by May.

The City Council’s meeting, still online due to COVID-19 restrictions, begins at 2 p.m. Members of the community may access the meeting through www.pasadenamedia.org and through www.cityofpasadena.net/commissions/agendas.

Comments may be submitted in advance to correspondence@cityofpasadena.net before Monday, and through www.cityofpasadena.net/city-clerk/public-comment on the day of the meeting.
