Councilmember Jess Rivas has endorsed Planning Commissioner Jason Lyon for Pasadena City Council. Lyon is one of three candidates seeking to replace retiring Vice-Mayor Andy Wilson in representing District 7.

Lynon is facing Alles Shay and Ciran Hadjian.

The election is this Tuesday, June 7.  Mail-in and early voting are already underway.  According to the Los Angeles County Clerk’s website, about 16% of District 7’s eligible voters have already cast their ballots.

“I am excited to endorse Jason Lyon for City Council,” said Councilmember Rivas in a statement released by the Lyon campaign. “By supporting the rent control initiative, Jason he has already shown that he is willing to stand up for renters, who make up the majority of Pasadenans and who deserve to have strong advocates on the council.”

“I am really honored to have Councilmember’s Rivas’s support,” Lyon said.  “In her time on the council, she has been a powerful advocate for all Pasadenans, and especially those who have not traditionally had a voice in city government.  We share a commitment to ensuring that every perspective is welcomed and respected in our civic conversation.”

Councilmember Rivas was appointed to represent Pasadena’s District 5 in 2020. The District was represented by Mayor Victor Gordo for nearly 20 years before he was elected to his current office. Councilmember Rivas is now seeking election to the District 5 seat.  She is unopposed  on Tuesday’s ballot.

Lyon currently serves as Vice Chair of the Pasadena Planning Commission, representing District 7.  He has previously served on the Historic Preservation Commission and a number of local nonprofit boards. He was the president of the Board of Young & Healthy from 2017 to 2019.

Rivas is the third member of the Pasadena City Council to endorse Lyon’s candidacy. Vice-Mayor Wilson and Councilmember Steve Madison previously announced their support of Lyon shortly after nominations for the District 7 seat closed in March 2022.

Lyon is also supported by Pasadena’s regional and national representatives, Congressmember Judy Chu, Supervisor Kathryn Barger, and State Senator Anthony Portantino. Lyon’s campaign website lists the support of more than 80 local leaders and organizations.

District 7 is home to many of Pasadena’s iconic institutions, including the Pasadena Playhouse, Caltech, Pasadena Community College, the Langham Huntington Hotel, and the Constance Hotel.

Beginning on its western border, District 7 is bounded by Arroyo Parkway, Fillmore, Marengo, California, Los Robles, Colorado, Oak, Del Mar, Craig, Rose Villa, Greenwood, Homet, Landor, and the city limits along Pasadena’s southern border.

Voters can find information about the election, including locations for in-person voting, on the City Clerk’s website, https://www.cityofpasadena.net/city-clerk/elections-2022/.
