On Sunday 1,030 COVID-19 cases and 10 deaths were reported by L.A. County Public Health officials.

Meanwhile, daily hospitalization numbers continue to steadily decline from more than 2,000 COVID-19 patients hospitalized daily in mid-July to an average of 1,100 patients hospitalized daily this past week. There are 1,089 people with COVID-19 currently hospitalized — the lowest since the beginning of May. Thirty-two percent of those people are confirmed cases in intensive care units.

To date, county officials have identified 240,749 positive cases of COVID-19 across all areas of L.A. County, with a total of 5,769 deaths.

Testing results are available for more than 2,282,000 individuals, with 10 percent of all people testing positive.

“I extend my deepest sympathies to all those who are experiencing loss and sorrow associated with the COVID-19 pandemic and my wishes for a complete recovery to those who are sick and hospitalized with COVID-19,” said Barbara Ferrer, county director of Public Health. “It is evident we are making progress, and this is a testament to the collective efforts of so many.”

According to Ferrer, the combination of hot weather and a desire for outdoor recreation is driving thousands of people to L.A. County beaches and recreational areas where the virus can spread.

“This is understandable, but any crowded space, even if it’s outdoors, are places where COVID-19 can spread. The best way to be safe while outdoors is to enjoy our beautiful recreational spaces with the people in your household. Because of the threat of COVID-19 spread, gatherings are not allowed unless specified by Health Officer orders. This means parties of any type are not allowed anywhere, including at the beach or park.”

Of the 10 new deaths reported today, two people who passed away were over the age of 80, three people who died were between the ages of 65 and 79, and one person who died was between the ages of 50 and 64. Five people had underlying health conditions, including two people over the age of 80, two people between the ages of 65 and 79, and one person between the ages of 50 and 64.

Ninety-three percent of the people who died from COVID-19 had underlying health conditions. Of those who died, information about race and ethnicity is available for 5,429 people (99 percent of the cases reported by Public Health); 51 percent of deaths occurred among Latino/Latinx residents, 24 percent among White residents, 15 percent among Asian residents, 10 percent among African American/Black residents, less than 1 percent among Native Hawaiian/Pacific Islander residents and 1 percent among residents identifying with other races.
