Los Angeles County Supervisor Kathryn Barger on Monday joined Department of Public Social Services in handing out backpacks filled with school supplies and new shoes to low-income children in Altadena.

Barger, along with DPSS Toy Loan Program Director Antonia Jiménez, led the event at Farnsworth Park, 568 Mt. Curve Ave., where more than 400 backpacks stuffed with back-to-school supplies were distributed to kids ages 5 through 17 from households receiving benefits through DPSS, according to Barger’s office.

The backpacks, placed directly into vehicles to maintain social distancing, contained rulers, pens, pencils, notebooks, calculators, erasers, and other school necessities.

The organization Shoes That Fit provided free footwear for the students, while the Pasadena Trader Joe’s store and the Altadena Grocery Outlet provided snacks, organizers said.

“Due to the financial impact of COVID-19 on the local economy, this year’s distribution is needed more than ever to ensure that students have the tools necessary for a successful school year,” Barger’s office said in a written statement. “DPSS thanks LA County Library for their support and for encouraging children to read.”
