Twenty-two new COVID-19 infections were detected in Pasadena on Wednesday, as the city’s rate of infection saw a fifth day of gradual but steady decline, according to Pasadena Public Health Department data.

With no new fatalities reported, Pasadena’s pandemic totals stood at 12,623 confirmed cases of the virus and 354 deaths, records show.

The city’s average number of weekly infections declined slowly but steadily over the previous five days, reaching 26.9.

At Huntington Hospital, 36 COVID-19 patients were admitted as of Tuesday, with 11 of them being treated in intensive care units, according to the facility.

Meanwhile, county health officials continued their pleas for those who have not been vaccinated to do so, citing data analysis showing those who are not vaccinated are nearly 30 times as likely to be hospitalized with the virus than those who are.

“Los Angeles County data shows that the COVID-19 infection rate among unvaccinated persons was 4.9 times and the hospitalization rate was 29.2 times the rates of fully vaccinated people in Los Angeles County on July 25, 2021,” the L.A. County Department of Public Health said in a written statement.

“Fully vaccinated people with COVID-19 infection were significantly less likely than unvaccinated persons to be hospitalized, to be admitted to an intensive care unit, to require mechanical ventilation, or to die from COVID-19 infection,” the statement said.

Recent studies have also concluded that existing COVID-19 vaccinations provide protection against the Delta variant, said L.A. County Director of Public Health Barbara Ferrer.

“Together we must continue to increase COVID-19 vaccinations, in coordination with other prevention strategies like masking, testing, contact tracing, and quarantine,” Ferrer said. “These efforts are critical to preventing COVID-19 hospitalizations and deaths.”

County officials announced 3,322 new infections and 36 fatalities on Wednesday, bringing the overall tallies to 1,391,363 confirmed COVID-19 cases and 25,150 deaths.

“With increased routine screening testing, including at schools and institutes of higher education, Public Health expects that case numbers will remain high,” the county statement said.

The number of patients hospitalized with the virus increased slightly to 1,747, with 27% of them being cared for in ICUs, county public health officials said.

Wednesday’s countywide daily test positivity rate was 2.9%, officials added.

State public health officials reported 11,899 new infections and 108 deaths on Wednesday, raising the pandemic totals to 4,145,550 cases of COVID-19 and 64,802 fatalities.

The statewide weekly positivity rate inched up to 5.4%, according to California Department of Public Health records.

As of Wednesday, L.A. County represented 34% of California’s COVID-19 infections and 39% of the state’s associated deaths.
