Only one player on the Pasadena City College men’s basketball team is scoring in double figures average per game this season. But that player is scoring enough for two double-digit scorers. Givon Crump burned the nets for a team season-high 34 points to lead the Lancers to their third consecutive South Coast Conference victory, defeating host East Los Angeles College, 75-67, Friday night.
Crump, the South Coast Conference leading scorer now at 20.4 points per game, put on a clinic when PCC fell behind early, 16-4. During a 15-2 Lancers’ run, Crump, a sophomore transfer guard from Baylor University, scored 10 consecutive points. Crump hit a pair of 3s in the spurt and Chris Smith’s jumper gave the Lancers a 19-18 lead with midway through the first half. PCC held that lead the rest of the game.
Pasadena improved to 11-8 overall and sit in second place in the SCC North Division at 3-1. Despite 19 points from Deon Geary, ELAC fell to 9-8 and 2-2.
Crump made five 3-pointers overall and was 11-for-23 from the floor. He added a game-high 13 rebounds and played the entire 40 minutes. Chris Smith, a frosh guard, added 14 points off the bench while reserve forward Rashad Smith (no relation) added six points and eight rebounds. Sophomore point guard Jerrick Thomas contributed eight points, seven assists, and added to his conference-leading steal total with two (61 in 19 games).
PCC next hosts Los Angeles Southwest College on Wednesday, Jan. 18 in a 7 p.m. tip-off at Hutto-Patterson Gymnasium. All Lancers’ games against SCC South Division opponents still count toward the team’s conference record.
