The Design Commission on Tuesday is expected to begin discussion on the proposed construction of an additional pool facility at the Langham Huntington Hotel.
The hotel, comprising a single lot totaling approximately 14 acres, is located at 1401 S. Oak Knoll Ave.
According to the Planning and Community Development Department’s staff report, the proposed project consists of the demolition of existing outdoor tennis courts and replacing them with new structures.
The proposed resort pool facility would consist of an in-ground, organically shaped swimming pool surrounded by a paved pool deck, which is proposed to also include four small cabanas, a food trailer, freestanding rinse showers, planting areas, and a 650-square-foot “wet pavilion” structure.
The “wet pavilion” structure is proposed to include restrooms for men and women, changing rooms, a utility room, and a supply kiosk.
Of the 15 trees in the proposed site, only one is a protected mature tree and is proposed to remain.
According to staff, potential design issues in the proposed project would include the compatibility of the project with the design of structures within the Huntington Hotel Historic District.
The design information provided as part of the hotel’s preliminary consultation application is intended to spur dialogue with the Design Commission so that further refinements and design solutions may be explored prior to receiving entitlements to avoid significant investment in the project’s design.
