Detectives Investigating Fatal Shooting of Man Along Trail Near Eaton Canyon Nature Center; Foul Play Not Initially Suspected

[Updated] Homicide detectives were dispatched to investigate a fatal shooting along a trail near the Eaton Canyon Nature Center in Pasadena early Sunday, although officials said the scene did not initially suggest foul play.

Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department deputies, who provide law enforcement services at the county park, and Pasadena Fire Department firefighters responded to the park in the 1700 block of Altadena Drive about 7 a.m.

A gunshot victim, initially described only as a man, was pronounced dead at the scene, according to a statement issued by the Sheriff’s Information Bureau.

A search-and-rescue team was called in to assist the coroner with retrieval of the body, Pasadena city spokeswoman Lisa Derderian said.

First responders did not note overt signs of foul play, however, an investigation by the Sheriff’s Homicide Bureau remained in its early stages.

“A handgun was discovered at the scene,” Deputy Wally Bracks of the Sheriff’s Information Bureau said in a written statement. “At this time, it is unknown if this shooting is criminal or accidental in nature.”

Authorities had received a report of a gunshot heard in the area about 1 a.m. but did not find any signs of a shooting, officials said. The body was discovered bu hikers shortly after daybreak.
