Dr. Robert B. Miller, Assistant Superintendent and Senior Vice President of Business and College Services at Pasadena City College, is leaving the college on March 31, 2016, to prepare for a new job at the Los Angeles Community College District.

PCC Superintendent-President Rajen Vurdien announced Monday that Miller has accepted the position of Vice Chancellor, Finance and Resource Development, for the LACCD.

Miller will be providing executive direction and strategic and long-range planning, implementation and management of all aspects of financial and resource development in the LACCD. He will also assist the LACCD president in matters related to financial planning, management and analysis, procurement, fundraising and gift giving, workforce development, governmental relations, communications, marketing and brand development.

Vurdien said Miller’s last day at PCC will be March 31.

“I’m confident that I can say without exaggeration that Dr. Miller has had a deeper influence on Pasadena City College than anyone else across our community,” Vurdien said in a letter to colleagues. “In his more than 20 years of service, he has played a role in nearly every aspect of our college, with distinguished service in educational services, academic affairs, business and financial services, human resources, strategic planning, and community engagement, to name only a few. His adept fiscal guidance and unparalleled command of local, state and federal policy has placed PCC at the forefront of the conversation about California’s community colleges, and positioned us to lead our peer institutions through a shifting educational landscape.”

Vurdien added Miller’s tenure as assistant superintendent and senior vice president at PCC has been marked by increased efficiency and continuous success of the college’s programs.

“He has played a significant role in many of our signature initiatives, including the establishment of our satellite campuses throughout our district and the construction of our landmark Center for the Arts building,” Vurdien said. “More than his service to our college and the community, however, I am most grateful for Dr. Miller’s friendship. Bob has grown to be a trusted colleague and comrade, and I have much appreciated his wise counsel during the past eight months. I will miss seeing him every day, but I know that he will continue to play a role in PCC’s future.”

Vurdien said PCC will start a search for Miller’s successor “in the coming weeks and months.”

Miller has been serving as Assistant Superintendent and Senior Vice President for Business and College Services since November 2012, although he has been associated with PCC since 1973 having graduated from the college in 1975.  He worked fulltime for the college from 1976 through 1986 leaving as the Assistant Dean, Learning Resources to pursue other career opportunities.  In 2005, Miller returned to PCC to serve as the Associate Dean, Academic Support.  In addition, Miller was responsible for specific college programs such as Distance Learning, Study Abroad, Off-Campus High School Bridge, the Teaching and Learning Center, and the Mathematics, Engineering, Science Achievement (MESA) program.

In May 2009, Miller was named the Interim Dean, Educational Services. In that capacity, he joined the college’s Executive Committee and continued his role managing the Academic Support office, providing administrative support and oversight of the Curriculum and Instruction process and was named the college’s Accreditation Liaison Officer. In July 2011, after a national search, Miller was named Vice President, Educational Services.

Miller holds an Associate of Arts Degree in telecommunications from Pasadena City College; a Bachelor of Science degree in Business Administration from the University of La Verne, La Verne, California; and Master’s degree in Public Administration from the California State University at Northridge, Northridge, California.  In May 2014, he completed his Doctorate in Public Administration from the University of La Verne, La Verne, California.

Miller and wife Barbara, who have been Pasadena residents since 1969, are both active in community affairs.  He has been affiliated with the Tournament of Roses Association for the past 30 years, and was named to the Association’s Executive Committee in 2013.  He will preside as President of the 2021 Rose Parade and Rose Bowl Game.
