After a weekend filled with volunteer cleanups, habitat restoration efforts, nature walks, and other Earth Day activities, events will continue around the Southland on Monday, April 22, Earth Day itself.
Pasadena Transit and Pasadena Dial-A-Ride will offer free rides on Monday as part of a broader push by transit agencies across Los Angeles County to promote sustainability and combat climate change, a Pasadena city official said.
Los Angeles Metro is also offering free rides on its bus, rail, bike share, and Metro Micro services, and all Metro buses and trains will be free beginning at 3 a.m. Monday until 2:59 a.m. Tuesday.
“Every Day is Earth Day at L.A. Metro,” Los Angeles Metro Chief Executive Officer Stephanie Wiggins said. “Transit is the cleanest way to travel, and by using our electric trains and low-emission buses, you can lower your carbon footprint by 45% compared to driving.”
“This Earth Day, we encourage Angelenos to take a free ride on Metro, leave the car at home, and enjoy everything Los Angeles County has to offer.”
Bus fare boxes will be deactivated, and all train-station fare gates will be opened. Metro Bike Share users can redeem free 30-minute rides by selecting “1-Ride” at any Metro Bike Share kiosk, online, or in the Metro Bike Share app by entering the promo code 042224. A credit or debit card is required. The first 30 minutes of all rides are free. Rides longer than 30 minutes are $1.75 each additional half-hour. Electric Metro Bike unlocking fees are waived.
Metro Micro customers can redeem free rides on Metro’s on-demand electric rideshare service by using the Metro Micro app or browser and entering code EarthDay24. The promo code will be available during regular operating hours for Los Angeles Metro’s Call Center (323-GoMetro or 323-466-3876) from 6 a.m. to 6 p.m.
Over the weekend, there were numerous events around the Pasadena area ahead of Monday’s Earth Day.
This past weekend, Pasadena and Altadena celebrated Arbor Day and Earth Day with a series of events aimed at promoting environmental conservation and awareness. The events, which took place on Saturday and Sunday, were part of a larger regional effort to mark these two important environmental holidays and engage the community in hands-on activities and educational programs.
On Saturday, the Sierra Club Pasadena Group led a 12-mile trek to Muir Peak in honor of John Muir’s birthday and Earth Day. The Pasadena Department of Public Works hosted an Arbor Day event at Victory Park, featuring a tree planting demonstration and free mulch for pickup. A family-friendly Earth Day charity fundraiser was held at the Standard Design Group Nurseries, offering live music, a spring plant sale, and activities for children. Proceeds benefited House of Ruth, Inc., a nonprofit organization dedicated to addressing domestic violence.
In Altadena, the Soul Force Project and the Pasadena Chapter of the United Nations Association hosted the “Environmental Justice for All” event at Solvang Ranch, emphasizing the power of nonviolence through the arts and featuring vegan food and live world music. Local artist and educator Leigh Adams was honored for her environmental justice activism.
On Sunday, the “Love Your Mother: Earth Day Gathering” took place at Hahamongna Watershed Park, fostering a sense of appreciation and reciprocity towards nature through mindful activities such as writing love letters to nature and participating in a ceremonial cacao circle.
Earth Day was established in 1970 to raise awareness of environmental issues and work to protect the planet from threats including pollution and deforestation.
