The Pasadena City College baseball team couldn’t solve East Los Angeles pitching ace Elias Novelo as the freshman hurled eight innings of 5-hit, shutout ball in the Lancers’ 7-0, South Coast Conference loss at Cal State Los Angeles Tuesday night.

The Lancers are 3-12 and fell to 1-3 in conference play. ELAC evened its overall record to 8-8 and stands 3-1 in the SCC. The teams meet up again for game 2 of their 3-game series Thursday, Mar. 15. Game time is 2:30 p.m. at Brookside Park’s Jackie Robinson Memorial Field. Saturday’s series finale is scheduled for Saturday, Mar. 17 at 12 noon at the Huskies’ “home” diamond at CSLA.

PCC had the game’s only extra-base hit, a double to left by infielder Sean Stone in the fifth inning. The Lancers stranded 12 runners on base (East LA left 15 on). Novelo walked one, but also hit four batters and worked his way out of a bases-loaded jam in the fourth. Huskies’ reliever Anthony Millan also left PCC scoreless despite loading the bases in the ninth.

For the Lancers, starter Brett Smith (1-4) had control issues with six walks and allowed four hits in 3.1 innings. He gave up a pair of unearned runs in the first two innings as PCC’s defense made four of its five errors to start the game. The Pasadena bullpen did well, including strong stints by Trevor Gleason (1.2 innings, three hits, no runs) and Brian Cuiriz (two innings, three strikeouts, no runs).

Manuel Estevez led the Huskies’ hitters with a 4-for-5 game and three RBI.
