A tense standoff came to a peaceful conclusion Thursday after an armed elderly man became involved in a four-hour standoff with a police SWAT team, authorities said.

The incident began about 11:35 a.m. when a person called police to report a relative had become upset and had been seen with a gun, Pasadena police Lt. Mario Ortiz said.

Officers responded to the home, where the man, estimated to be between 80 and 90, refused to come outside, he said. At one point, gunshots were heard inside the home, although no one was struck. It ultimately appeared the shots were fired into the home in anger.

A SWAT team then took charge of the scene, according to Ortiz.

Officers were able to use a remote camera to see that the man appeared to be asleep or unconscious and made their move about 3:30 p.m., Ortiz said. The man was taken into custody without further incident.

Police took the man to a hospital for examination as detectives looked into what criminal charges he may face, Ortiz said.
