A fire tore through a detached residential garage in Pasadena, ultimately leading to its collapse, amid reports of possible ammunition exploding inside on Monday afternoon, authorities said.

The fire was reported about 1:45 p.m. in the 2000 block of Galbreth, between Tierra Alta Drive and Greg Avenue, city spokeswoman Lisa Derderian said.

Arriving firefighters found the garage “well-involved” with flames, with surrounding structures threatened, she said. The structure was compromised, so they took a “defensive” stance and poured water onto the flames from the perimeter.

Within a matter of minutes, the burning garage collapsed, Derderian said.

Officials also received reports of possible ammunition exploding inside the garage, she said.

No injuries were reported. The cause of the fire remained under investigation.

It was the second residential fire in less than an hour handled by the Pasadena Fire Department on Monday.

Another fire broke out a short time earlier inside a home in the 1200 block of Redford Avenue, according to Derderian.

The residents managed to get themselves outside and police evacuated neighbors, she said.

It was determined a dishwasher had caught fire, spreading flames through the home’s interior, she said.

The flames were quickly put out and no injuries were reported, however, Derderian described the damage to the home as “significant.”
