First Congregational Church of Pasadena: Reflections for Sunday Worship…

This week marks the beginning of the season of Lent – a forty day journey from Ash Wednesday to Easter. The Church observed some sort of fasting as part of this season as far back as 325 A.D. People fasted from various types of rich food and ate simply and sparingly during Lent. Others fasted from certain undesirable behaviors in their lives. The entire season is designed as a time of reflection, penitence and transformation towards a new relationship with God. By giving up things or taking on a new practice, most people are moving out of their routines and comfort zone to be open to hearing something new from God. The scripture today remembers the story of Jesus fasting in the desert for 40 days and the trials and temptation he experienced. It is an invitation to do each’ own fasting and practices during this season. Everyone will reflect on the text this week as all embark on their Lenten journeys. Everyone is invited to come out for an evening with other UCC churches on Ash Wednesday, Feb. 22nd. The church services begin at 6 p.m. with a potluck in FCC’s parlors and then a simple worship service at 7 p.m. in the chapel. Several area UCC pastors will participate in the service, along with Rev. Schwiebert, Intern Sam Pullen and Rev. Marlene Pomeroy. However anyone may choose to embark on this holy season, may God’s presence bless the next 40 days.
