The First United Methodist Church, located at 500 E Colorado Blvd in Pasadena will host an Earth Day celebration today, Sunday, April 21, at 11:00 a.m. to encourage attendees to adopt new environmentally friendly habits. The event, titled “One New Habit to Help Our Planet,” will be held on the church’s Colorado Patio after Sunday worship services and will feature a range of activities and resources aimed at promoting sustainability.
Attendees will have the opportunity to sample vegan food products from local women-owned small businesses, including Maciel’s Plant-Based Butcher Shop and Yoga-urt, underscoring the environmental benefits of plant-based diets.
My Zero Waste Store, a local business in Pasadena, will provide education on reducing plastic use and waste.
The event will also include a representative from the Pasadena Library, who will share information about their Seed Library and earth-friendly workshops. The church said a blessing of the animals ceremony, a tradition in many churches, will honor the relationship between humans and animals and our responsibility to care for creation.
Participants are encouraged to bring used sneakers, eyeglasses, and plastic grocery bags for recycling and reuse. The sneakers and glasses will be recycled to help those in need, while the church’s Community Pantry will reuse the bags, supporting waste reduction efforts.
Climate change will remain a central focus, with information packets and resource guides to be provided to educate attendees about its causes, effects, and steps individuals can take to reduce their environmental impact.
First United Methodist’s Earth Day celebration reflects a growing movement within faith communities to engage in environmental issues as a moral imperative and demonstrates the church’s commitment to community engagement and education on sustainability practices.
