While the Pasadena Main Library remains closed as a result of a seismic evaluation, the Friends of the Pasadena Public Library (FOPPL) have decided to reopen their bookstore in January 2024 at a new location on the Jefferson Elementary School campus.

Jefferson Elementary is conveniently located at 1500 East Villa Ave., between Hill and Allen Avenues, and is just a stone’s throw away from the Jefferson Library Branch

In an announcement, the Friends of the Pasadena Public Library said they are currently accepting book donations as they anticipate resuming their mission to provide the community with access to a wide selection of books. Book enthusiasts and library supporters are encouraged to contribute to this worthwhile cause.

The reopening of the bookstore will be on January 9, 2024, the group’s announcement said. As usual, the bookstore will be offering a wide range of used books, DVDs, CDs, LPs, and an extensive collection of children’s books.

The bookstore will initially operate on a limited schedule, opening its doors on Tuesdays, Thursdays, and Saturdays from 11 a.m. until 4 p.m. However, FOPPL has plans to expand its hours to accommodate more book enthusiasts in the future.

The Friends of Pasadena Public Library play a crucial role in supporting the library’s programs, special services, and cultural events, with a primary mission to ignite the excitement of discovery and foster a love for reading among library patrons of all ages.

Funds generated through book sales at the FOPPL Bookstore have a significant impact on supporting popular library programs, including the summer reading clubs for children and teens, as well as community-wide “One City, One Story” events.

The Pasadena Central Library was closed in May 2021 after a structural assessment revealed that most of the building is constructed with unreinforced masonry-bearing walls that support concrete floors and walls, which can be a life-safety hazard in the event of an earthquake.

With construction projected to start in Fall 2025, the retrofitting and repair process at he Central Library will unfold in multiple phases which could culminate in an anticipated re-opening by Fall 2028.
