Geoffrey L. Baum has officially launched his campaign for re-election to the governing board of the Pasadena Area Community College District, according to a press release issued Saturday, August 8.

First elected in 2001, Baum represents Trustee Area 1, which includes La Cañada Flintridge, the west Pasadena neighborhoods of San Rafael and Linda Vista and the western portions of Altadena. The election will be held November 3, 2009.

“Facing severe cuts at a time when more students than ever are turning to PCC, the college is at a crossroads,” said Baum. “Despite these and other challenges, we must preserve the outstanding academic instruction and career training necessary to help students transfer to four-year universities or find jobs in our rapidly changing economy. I will continue my efforts to secure funding for critical programs and insist on prudent financial management and accountability of hard-earned taxpayer dollars. In this off-year election, I will work vigorously to focus community attention on the future of Pasadena City College.”

Baum was recently confirmed with unanimous bi-partisan support to the state board of governors of the California Community College system.

Baum’s career spans higher education, community service and journalism. He currently works at the University of Southern California as managing director of the Center on Communication Leadership and Policy at the Annenberg School for Communication. He previously served as assistant dean of the USC Annenberg School and assistant vice president at Claremont McKenna College.

He has also worked in Washington, DC, helping citizens monitor the work of their elected officials as executive producer for C-SPAN, the national public affairs television network.

As a community volunteer, Baum serves on the boards of the West Pasadena Residents Association, the Armory Center for the Arts and the Foothill Family Service advisory board.
