‘Giving Tuesday’ Will “Demonstrate the Generosity of the People of Pasadena”

After businesses sought to woo customers on Black Friday, Small Business Saturday and Cyber Monday, local nonprofits are hopeful Giving Tuesday will help bolster their charitable endeavors throughout Pasadena.

With a large number of active nonprofits in the city, Pasadena has a rich history of charity and giving.

“It is frequently stated that Pasadena has more charitable organizations per capita than any other city in the country.  It is also stated that Pasadena has over 1,200 active non-profits. Charitable donations are a major and a distinguishing feature of life in this community,” former mayor of Pasadena Bill Bogaard told Pasadena Now this week.

Bogaard hopes that this year’s Giving Tuesday would once again “demonstrate the generosity of the people of Pasadena.”

“The charitable needs of this community are extensive, including children’s physical and mental health, the needs of seniors, the scores of schools and institutions of higher learning, healthcare institutions, the innumerable arts and culture organizations such as museums, symphonies, live theatres, and dance companies, after school programs and other support activities for youngsters who are less privileged, homelessness and the families that are housing- and food-insecure,” he added.

Started nationally in 2012 to encourage generosity, Giving Tuesday calls for the public to take a break from the shopping and bustle of the holiday season to give something back, whether it be a donation to a charity or simply lending a helping hand to a stranger.

“My hope is that this year’s Giving Tuesday will once again demonstrate the generosity of the people of Pasadena and boost the resources of the many nonprofits that work hard to meet the City’s charitable needs,” Bogaard said.

Giving Tuesday is a great opportunity for animal lovers to show their support for Pasadena Humane’s lifesaving programs and services for animals, PR and Communications Manager at Pasadena Humane,

Kevin McManus said.

According to McManus, every $1 donated to Pasadena Humane becomes $4.

“We have a really generous donor who’s going to basically make every dollar that is donated in the next five days count as $4 because it’s a huge matching campaign. So we’re really excited,” said McManus last week.

“If we can raise $75,000 before the end of day on Tuesday (Nov. 29), then it’s going to get triple matched basically.”

The money that will be raised by Pasadena Humane will be used to help provide food, shelter and medical care to animals in need.

The community has until midnight on Tuesday to donate to the nonprofit.

Aside from Pasadena Humane, the community can also donate to the Pasadena Senior Center.

Donations to the nonprofit will greatly benefit seniors in so many ways, Akila Gibbs, Executive Director at PSC said.

“We have to raise money to pay for all of our programs and we have over 50 programs that we offer on a weekly basis. And so that money really helps us,” Gibbs said.

“We have lots of programs, health lectures and a health fair – all of those things that are free to the community cost us money. So when we raise money like this, it can help us to continue to provide services like that and many others.”

According to Gibbs, Facebook will match PSC’s Giving Tuesday collections.

“If we were to raise $10,000, they would give us $10,000, which is really generous,” said Gibbs.
