Ani Hemelians scored the natural hat trick as the Pasadena City College women’s soccer team opened South Coast Conference play with a 3-0 win over El Camino College-Compton Center at Robinson Stadium Tuesday. After being winless through five games, the Lancers (3-3-2) are on a 3-game winning streak.
In the fifth minute, Hemelians started her scoring binge by taking a pass from Rachel Schroeder on the far side and then lifting a shot that bounced off the inside of the left post and in for a 1-0 PCC lead.
In the 59th minute, the freshman forward struck again as she received a long ball from defender Bailey Shaw-Rodriguez and and turned the breakaway into hard shot from 10 yards out for her second goal.
Just two minutes later, Hemelians received a pass inside the goalie box from Talin Kojababian. The Crescenta Valley High graduate made a quick spin move and on the finish kicked her third goal into the left corner of the net. She now has a team-leading five goals. It was the first hat trick by a PCC player since Helena Macintosh performed the feat in a win at Mt. San Jacinto last year (September 25).
The Lancers outshot Compton, 18-6, as the Tartars had few decent scoring chances. PCC goalie Angelique Ulmer recorded her third consecutive shutout, making five saves. The defender corps again made things easy for Ulmer with Shaw-Rodriguez, Michelle Morales, Karina Costilla, Erika Miranda and Rebecca Caamano clogging the lanes.
PCC next plays at Mt. San Antonio College on Friday, Oct. Â 3 in a 4 p.m. conference game.
