A food drive run by Huntington Hospital staff last month collected more than 4,200 pounds of nonperishable food and nearly $1,500 to benefit the Pasadena-based nonprofit Friends In Deed, according to the hospital.
Throughout the month of January, “Huntington Hospital nurses, physicians and employees honored Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr.’s legacy of giving back to those in need with a food drive,” hospital representatives said in a written statement.
Friends In Deed Food Pantry Program Director Tim Nister said the support would be put to good use.
“Every week, Friends In Deed provides food to between 380 and 400 families and we rely on community partners to help us make sure we never have to turn anyone away for lack of food,” Nister said.
“With food drives like the one we received from Huntington Hospital, we can continue to make sure that every family that comes for food, receives food,” he said.
The hospital was glad to help, said Huntington Hospital Vice President of Enterprise, Diversity, Equity and Inclusion Pamela Witherspoon.
“Huntington Hospital is committed to the health and well-being of the community, and this begins with access to nutritious food,” Witherspoon said.
“In honor of Martin Luther King, our employees rallied around this important cause to support our friends, family and neighbors who may be facing food insecurities, especially as a result of the COVID-19 pandemic,” according to Witherspoon.
“We are so proud to provide our donations to Friends In Deed, whose work providing food in the community is so desperately needed right now” she said.
