Nearly an inch of hail accumulation blanketed parts of Pasadena Tuesday afternoon creating a  winter wonderland dramatically different from last weekend’s nearly 90-degree Super Bowl Sunday.

Temperatures plunged nearly 30 degrees and rain, lightening, and hail developed in Pasadena.

Social media was abuzz with pictures and video of familiar Pasadena landmarks covered in so much hail some called it snow. Most striking was the Rose Bowl and nearby Brookside Park draped in solid white.

“Crazy!” said Pamela Lahey on Pasadena Now’s Facebook page. Her comment echoed hundreds of other Likes on the post.

Rain showers and isolated thunderstorms developed Tuesday, thanks to a cold low-pressure system that moved into the region from Northern California, according to the National Weather Service.

By late afternoon, about an inch of hail was reported in the Pasadena area, with more hail and rain falling in La Cañada Flintridge.

The low-pressure system will move out of the area Wednesday, with warmer and drier conditions on tap for Thursday, according to the weather service.
