[UPDATED] The first competitive race in the June 7 City Council elections was set on Monday when local Commissioner Brandon Lamar qualified for the District 3 contest.

Lamar will square off against incumbent John Kennedy who qualified for the race last week.

Lamar sits on the Human Relations Commission, and sits on the boards of Pasadenans Organizing for Progress, and the Pasadena branch of the NAACP.

He is also a member of Leadership Pasadena and Black Los Angeles Young Democrats.
“I am very excited to earn the support of my neighbors in District 3, we have a lot of work to do, and I’m confident we will get it done,” Lamar said. “The decisions that we make today will serve as a blueprint for future generations to come. To those of you in District 3 whose support I’ve yet to earn, I hear your voices and concerns. I look forward to connecting with each one on your doorstep or over the phone. I remain committed to advocating for and uplifting the voices of the community.”
District 3 is bounded by the 210 Freeway, Colorado Boulevard, Lake Avenue, El Molino Avenue, Orange Grove Boulevard, Los Robles Avenue, Fair Oaks Avenue, Marengo Avenue, Mountain Street, Jackson Street, El Molino Avenue, Ladera Avenue, and Washington Boulevard.

Seats in districts 3, 5 and 7 will be contested in the June 7 election.

District 5 incumbent Jess Rivas qualified for the election last week.

According to the city’s website early Tuesday morning no one has yet qualified for the District 7 election.

In that race, Jason Lyon, Ciran Hadjian and Allen Shay have pulled papers to replace Vice Mayor Andy Wilson.

Candidates have until Friday to turn in their nominating papers in district 3 and 5.
The deadline in District 7 will be extended by five days since the incumbent is not seeking re-election.

Candidates must win more than 50 percent of the vote to capture the seat in the primary election. If no candidate reaches that threshold the top two vote getters will square off in a runoff election in November.
