LIVE BLOGGING with Eddie Rivera | Dodgers Drop a Painful One to the Giants, 3-2

We're blogging the second game of four at AT&T Park

Published on Friday, April 8, 2016 | 2:16 pm

GAME TIME IS 7:15 p.m.

(Publisher’s Note: Pasadena is lovely any time of the year, but even our Community Editor Eddie Rivera needs to see the world now and then. Tonight he is following the Dodgers to San Francisco to see them battle against the San Francisco Giants. And every Pasadenan is a Dodger fan by association, so, he’ll be blogging and tweeting tonight’s contest.)

You think last night’s game was painful? Try this one.

Rookie pitcher Ross Stripling was working on a no-hitter through seven innings. When he walked Angel Pagan, Manager Dave Roberts pulled him from the game and brought in Chris Hatcher. It’s a decision that will fuel the arguments of baseball fans all season long, and perhaps beyond.

Hatcher promptly gave up a two-run homer to Trevor Brown. He walked the next batter and argued the call with umpire Kennedy. Roberts came out to help argue, and got thrown out for his troubles.

Three innings laters, Brandon Crawford homered to deep left, and the Giants prevailed in ten innings, 3-2.

The Dodgers go at them again tomorrow night.

Here is how we blogged it:

Following a painful loss yesterday as Hunter Pence hit a grand slam in the eighth to help Los Gigantes beat the Dodgers 12-6, the Blue Ones are here tonight for game two.

New Dodger pitcher Ross Stripling will make his major league debut after three seasons in the minors. He’ll face Giants ace Matt Cain. The Giants and Dodgers are currently tied for first in the NL West with identical records of 3-1.

That changes tonight.

FIRST INNING

Top

First pitch 7:15 p.m.

There are very few blue jerseys in the stands tonight, as  Pasadena’s Chase Utley steps up to the plate. He goes 2-0, 3-0, and walks on four pitches.

(All of the announcers here are female. 😉 )

Corey Seager goes 1-1, 1-2, then hits into a textbook double play.

Justin Turner, our of the LBC, grounds out to First.

Dodgers 0, Giants coming up…

Bottom

Denard Span (No relation) gets Stipling’s first major league strike, then flies out to center.

Joe Panik gets to 2-1, and hits one softly to Sipling, who tosses lightly to Gonzales.

(Here comes the rain…..)

Van Slyke makes a heroic catch in left field to end the inning to end Hunter Pence’s at-bat.

Dodgers 0-Giants 0.

SECOND INNING

Adrian Gonzales goes to 0-2,..the rain increases….he is at 1-2, then flies out to deep center.

THIRD INNING

Top

Ellis gets all striked out.

New pitcher Ross Stripling flies out to center. Not literally.

Chase Utley brings on the Boo Birds, as he gets to 1-2, then 2-2, then beats out a play at first.

Seager flies out.

Dodgers 0, Giants 0.

Bottom

Angel Pagan flies out to center field and Joc Pederson, per se.

Trevor Brown strikes out (no relation).

Matt Cain looks at strike three, somewhat wistfully.

Dodgers 0, Giants 0.

FOURTH INNING

Top

They are dragging the field. The rain has kinda stopped-ish.

Justin Turner is at 1-1, 3-1, then is, like, out.

Gonzales, wielding a hot bat lately, grounds out to first, regardless.

Puig brings out the Boo Birds his own self,…..as he gets to 0-2, then grounds out to first.

Bottom

Doc Pederson flies through the air in center to rob Denard Span of his hopes and dreams. Temporarily.

Joe Panik (0 for 1 tonight, but he’s cool. See what I did there?), draws a walk.

Hunter Pence, last night’s hero burger, draws a strike, then 2-1, then 3-1, then gets walked with some music in the key of C, and that stands for chin.

Brandon Belt is at 1-1, then flies out to left.

Matt Duffy sees two strikes whiz past him, then grounds out to first.

Dodgers 0, Giants 0.

FIFTH INNING

Top

Joc Pederson doubles to left.

Scott Van Slyke is at 2-0, then flies out to Left van Left.

AJ “Rarely a Hero” Ellis singles and brings in Pederson. Silly me.

Stripling gets to 1-2, then strikes out.

Utley does 1-2, with Ellis dancing at first, then singles him along.

Corey Seager is 0-2, 1-2, then socks one to short center, scoring Ellis.

Justin Turner flies out to right.

Dodgers 2, Giants 0.

Matt Duffy goes 1-1, and grounds to first.

Dodgers 2, Giants 0.

EIGHTH INNING

Top

Dodgers 2, Giants 0.

Steady drizzle now…

Bottom

Brandon Crawford gets to 1-1, 1-2, sends one waaaaay back …..deep….to Yasiel Puig

Angel Pagan is at 2-1, gets walked.

Chat show on the mound, and Roberts takes out Stripling.

Chris Hatcher now pitching for the Dodgers.

Trevor Brown, in a steady drizzle, is at 2-0, 3-0, then homers. It’s 2-2.

First, Hatcher gives up a home run, then walks Blanco, then he has a meltdown tantrum, and Roberts get thrown out of the game trying to back up Hatcher.

Span gets to 2-2, the runner is going, and then not going, and we are still at 2-2.  He moves Blanco over to second. And Chris Hatcher, unable to locate the strike zone with a compass,  is still pitching (!).

Panik is at 2-2, and grounds out to first. Serious damage done.
