Councilmember Justin Jones and Deputy to the Mayor Vannia De La Cuba distributed free backpacks filled with school supplies such as pencils and notebooks to K-12 students at Robinson Park on Saturday, August 12. The event, called the Backpack and School Supplies Giveaway, aimed to ensure that students have the tools they need to succeed in school.

“Kids were very enthusiastic and parents appreciative,” said Councilmember Jones.

Aside from backpacks and school supplies, each child also received a box lunch. K-12 students had to be present to receive the supplies.

Mayor Victor Gordo sat out the event due to an illness.

Councilmember Jones, an education advocate, emphasized the importance of supporting students’ educational journeys and promoting their success.

“I know the importance of encouraging children to be all they can be. And so whether it’s giving them school supplies, a backpack, giving them the resources and the tools to succeed is very important to allow them to pursue their dreams and desires and to be anything they want to be in this world,” said Jones.

Jones believes that providing students with the tools they need is the first step to succeeding in the classroom.

“You don’t have the material, how can you be successful? So it’s showing that your City councilmember, your mayor, they care about the success of these students that live in our community,” said Jones.

Jones also believes that the event will not only impact students but also their families.

“Oftentimes parents are looking for help, whether it’s childcare or it’s through school supplies. To know that your City Council, your city is helping provide these supplies for you, I think it goes a long way,” said Jones.

Titan Disposal and Bridge Housing were sponsors and partners of the backpack giveaway.
