Looking for a Buyer, Hotel Constance to Reopen With July Fourth Party

Published on Tuesday, June 29, 2021 | 6:53 am

A shuttered Pasadena hotel is using an Independence Day party to reopen its doors and resume operations, even as it continues efforts to find a buyer.

The Hotel Constance Pasadena, 928 E. Colorado Blvd., has partnered with a company called MediaCast365 to announce an upcoming event to be held at the hotel over the July 4th weekend after being closed for more than one and a half years.

The hotel will continue to operate during Chapter 11 bankruptcy proceedings, while the property it owns and occupies is in foreclosure, according to a hotel spokesperson.

The Independence Day weekend’s three-day event kicks-off at 5 p.m. Friday, July 2 with a happy hour and live performance by jazz performer Ryan Cross with Ashley Tamar Davis.

On July 3 and 4, attendees will enjoy VIP poolside cabanas, bottle service, and gourmet cuisine with live performances by local R&B crooner and John Muir High School Graduate Jon B, Candace Boyd, Triple-Threat Eric Bellinger, soulful recording artist Von, Guordan Banks, and esteemed vocalist MASTA & The Edge of Soul.

“We’re looking to reopen at the same time with the event,” said William Chu, acting general manager of the Constance Hotel.

“We opened the hotel. We are going through all the cleanup right now. We’re almost done and we’re waiting to work with the city of Pasadena to come and inspect all the post COVID regulations and requirements, recommendations from the city as well as the state and the CDC. So that we’ll be in compliance before we open. So we look to be doing that sometime next week.”

According to Chu, the hotel owners are working through the system to sell the hotel.

The corner property has a rich local history.

The hotel opened with 164 guest rooms in December 1929. At that time, there were 18 hotels in the city. After its heyday at the end of the roaring twenties, the hotel became office space and ultimately, for decades, an assisted living facility.

The Pasadena-based Singpoli company purchased the hotel in 2004 and it reopened in 2014 as the Hotel Constance.

It’s already up for sale. We have invited investors to make proposals and we’re in the counterproposal stage,” Chu said.

According to Chu, the hotel has to be opened because the next buyer plans to continue operations.

In May, the Pasadena hotel filed a class action lawsuit against its insurer in an attempt to recover losses sustained during the COVID-19 pandemic, according to court documents.

Park Place Master Tenant LLC, which operated Hotel Constance in Pasadena, filed the litigation against Zurich American Insurance Co. and Zurich North America on Wednesday in federal court in Illinois.

The case revolves around a clause in the insurance contract that excludes the insurer from “any virus, bacterium or other micro-organism that induces or is capable of inducing physical distress, illness or disease,” according to the filing.

“That is still ongoing, but right now, as of now we don’t have any new updated information,” Chu said.
