A man who was apparently suffering a mental health episode climbed atop a convenience store, damaged equipment and held police at bay with a pole for hours Saturday morning.

Police closed the immediate area about 9:30 a.m. and stopped traffic near the 7-Eleven store at the corner of California Boulevard and San Gabriel Boulevard.

Negotiations lasted until shortly after 11 a.m. when the man was detained. He was taken by police to a medical facility for psychiatric evaluation, according to Lt. Carolyn Gordon.
