[Updated]  Police on Friday arrested a man holding a lighter over the hood of a police car he had doused with an unidentified liquid, stopping him before any flames could be ignited, authorities said.

Officers had rushed to the north side of the Pasadena Police headquarters building at 207 North Garfield Avenue about 1:37 a.m. after they received reports a man was pouring liquid onto a patrol car parked on Walnut Street along the building’s northern perimeter, according to City spokesperson Lisa Derderian.

The subsequent investigation revealed that the suspect was trying to light the hood of the marked police vehicle on fire, she said.

According to Derderian the suspect was arrested for attempted arson and booked into the Pasadena Police jail. The case is under investigation by the Pasadena Fire Arson Investigator.

The name of the suspect has not been released.
