Mark Piscitelli Regraces Green Street

The landmark men's shop is back, its founding muse restless after a short retirement

Mark Piscitelli, the irrepressible men’s clothier who retired and closed his landmark shop last June, is back in the game with a wonderful new shop on the corner of Green Steet and Madison Avenue in the Playhouse District.

“We like traditionalism with a bit of flare,” says Piscitelli, ensconced in his new digs. “And we like color, it excites us here!”

His shop has always reflected a cosmopolitan, confident point of view for businessmen who like more color and sparkle than the preppie, Anglo-American looks elsewhere in town. (With a name like Piscitelli, is it any wonder that the ranges reflect Italianate influences?)

Piscitelli is joined by Manager Michael Amer, who has has been at the store for a decade.

“Mark and I work hand in hand in selecting great merchandise for the store,” Michael told Pasadena Now. “We’re very, very selective.  We pick the very latest of styles from Europe directly.  We deal with very high end fashion houses in Italy, France, Spain, and Germany.”

“Our client is usually a successful executive who likes and appreciates texture, colors, and fine clothing,” Amer says.

The store offers up an assortment of beautiful Italian twill shirts in delicious shades of plum and cranberry, along with more traditional stripings and solids. A custom shirt department offers discriminating men the chance to get dress and casual shirts tailored to their precise requirements.

Colorful sports shirts and lightweight flannel check shirts are complemented by warm Alpaca polos for off-duty wear.

Piscitelli and Amer have chosen beautifully-tailored Italian trousers and rich leather belts for casual wear or to match up with beautiful sportscoats and their special, soft-as-butter lambskin bombers.

For its size, the shop offers up complete wardrobing.

“We have very fine suits.  We have a very nice selection of sports coats from traditional to more fashion forward.  We also have some nice blazers, a real staples of a man’s wardrobe , both in black and navy blue.  We carry outer wear — mostly topcoats and carcoats, three quarter cut. These are made with fine wool, lamb’s wool and cashmere.  We have a nice array of merino wool sweaters, with different styles from the mock-turtle to the full turtleneck to the polo.  We also have a beautiful and exclusive selection of ties that we take pride in,” Amer says.

Piscitelli himself understands menswear. His career in the industry began in 1963 at Bullock’s Sherman Oaks. He was quickly transferred to Bullock’s Pasadena and ultimately promoted to Bullock’s Wilshire, where he was instrumental in identifying promising new designers (like Bill Blass, whom he introduced to Bullock’s shoppers in a special Designer Shop).

In a town which sadly lacks the kind of shops which once graced South Lake and served local gentlemen in a gentlemanly way, Mark Piscitelli is a refreshing return to good form.

“Our store is an experience!” laughs Amer. “Now and then I greet a gentleman who’s never been to the store before, is not familiar with the concept, and, is at first, reluctant to look around.  But with our experience and our warmth and friendly approach, we’ll make him feel at home.  And then, before you know it, they start trying things on and enjoy the experience.  They become regulars!”

Both Piscitelli and Amer agree:  Come in, see, touch, try!
