During the first half of Wednesday night’s game, the Pasadena City College men’s basketball team played as if there were a lid covering the Hutto-Patterson rim. The Lancers totaled a modern-day school record for least points scored in a half with 11 and went on to lose their third straight South Coast Conference contest, 54-47, against visiting Los Angeles Harbor College.
PCC’s first 20 minutes featured just two field goals made by the team, a 3-pointer by Givon Crump in the opening minute and a Crump offensive rebound and short 2-point bank nearly 16 minutes later. The Lancers other six points came on free throws. PCC shot 7.7 percent (2-for-26) from the floor and fell behind, 30-11, by halftime.
To the Lancers’ credit, they battled back in the second half to make things respectable. PCC even closed a 21-point deficit to five in the final five seconds. LA Harbor put the game away by making 24 of 36 free throws overall compared to a 6-for-10 (all in the first half) night for Pasadena.
The Lancers (12-10, 3-4 in the South Coast Conference) were led by reserve guard Kameron Burch, who scored 14 of his game-high 18 points in the second half. Burch, who has missed several games due to illness, made four 3-pointers. Crump added 13 points and eight rebounds. Jerrick Thomas had six points and six assists while frosh forward Laik Carter tallied six points with four rebounds.
LA Harbor (13-8, 3-4 in SCC action) received 16 points by Dennis Hardwell and 10 points plus eight boards from Kyle Reid. The Seahawks had similar trouble with the South end basket that troubled PCC earlier by making only four field goals in 20 attempts in the second half. Â PCC ended up making more field goals (17 to 14) than its opponent.
PCC travels to face El Camino College Friday, Jan. 27 in a 7 p.m. tip-off at the Torrance campus.
