Most dictionaries define retirement as the time to withdraw from an active life. Others say it’s the time to wear out a rocking chair. The creators of MonteCedro, a new retirement community being built in Altadena, have a different definition: It’s time for “Masterpiece Living.”

“Our mission is to help  people remain vibrant and active, involved in a meaningful life,” says Peggy Buchannan, Marketing Director of MonteCedro. “It’s what we call Masterpiece Living, and it’s based on research from the McArthur Foundation. It’s a program, or set of tools, that enhance people’s lives and makes them have a more successful changes  .”

Buchanan is the former Executive Director of the Pasadena Senior Center, well-trained in dealing with issues important to seniors. She says MonteCedro will make a difference to people and the community.

MonteCedro’s Leadership Team, headed by Episcopal Communities & Services President and CEO Martha Tamburrano, believes that retirement is the time to begin anew, and that the Pasadena area is a great starting point for “retirement adventures.” From Old Town shopping to Rose Parade pageantry, from hiking trails along the San Gabriel Mountains to the Pacific shore, Pasadena’s natural attractions, cultural centers and destinations for pure delight seem as if they were designed for retirement adventures.

“MonteCedro is scheduled to open in late 2014 or early 2015,” Buchanan says. “It will be a brand new community and there’s something to be said about that. It’s fresh, open, and the design is contemporary. Those who retire here will begin a new career: self-discovery!”

Masterpiece Living at MonteCedro is designed for individuals that are statistically better prepared to reduce the 12 Risk Factors of Aging as identified by the Mayo Clinic. Through a self-paced and results-oriented program, participants in Masterpiece Living experience increased social interaction, self-awareness, a greater sense of purpose, and higher states of physical and mental conditioning.

”We encourage family members, grandkids included, to come and use the amenities of the community,” says Peggy Buchannan, Marketing Director of MonteCedro. [Image: MonteCedro]

“I think our philosophy of keeping people active and engaged is really important,” says Buchanan. “MonteCedro will be greater Pasadena’s first new continuing care retirement community (CCRC) in over 20 years. Our healthcare concept, which we call “Your Home, Your Care, Your Way” will support the residents to live in their own residences at MonteCedro for as long as they live.

“Many retirement facilities have a policy that requires residents to move through levels of care as their health needs increase. Nobody really wants to go to assisted living or skilled nursing.  We are designing MonteCedro to building codes that will allow residents to remain in their homes, receiving care right there, instead of having to move,” Buchanan continues.

MonteCedro will offer an extensive range of apartments and villas, a quintessential California fitness center, pool & spa, and a delightful array of social and recreational opportunities perfectly suited to the art of fine living.

“People need to know that we accept pets and we encourage family members, grandkids included, to come and  use the amenities of the community, Buchanan explains. “Monthly fees cover utilities, including wi-fi and cable, all maintenance indoor and outdoor, as well as meals, transportation, the fitness center, the education center, movies, parking, security, health clinic open 24/7 with a licensed nurse.”

If you love everything about the Pasadena area — if you’ve wanted to create your retirement lifestyle here, near the restaurants of Old Town, The Huntington Library, Eaton Canyon, The Pasadena Symphony — well, up until now, you’ve had limited options. MonteCedro may be what you’ve been looking for and many seniors who do the math find that residing at MonteCedro is comparable in cost to what they are already spending – without the services and amenities!

“You get 90% of your entrance fees back,” states Buchanan. “So if you decide to move to Arizona, whether it’s five months later, or 10 years later, you get 90% back. If you stay forever, 90% of those fees eventually go to your estate or whomever you designate.
