More Candidates Qualify for PUSD Election

Incumbent Kim Kenne has qualified for the District 1 race in the PUSD Board of Education races.

According to the City Clerk’s website, Kenne and Altadena Town Councilmember Billy Malone have turned in the necessary paperwork to make the ballot.

Rita Miller has also qualified for the East Altadena district.

All told, all candidates that have pulled papers have qualified for the election exception two.

Bree Jensen pulled papers, but changed her mind about running The other candidate, Anne David recently pulled papers in District 7.

Juan Pablo Albán and Yarma Velázquez have already qualified for the election in that district, which is currently represented by Scott Phelps, who is not seeking re-election.

The nomination period will close on Friday, Aug. 12 at 5 p.m.

Candidates must receive and file a nomination petition before the deadline. The petition must be signed by 25 qualified voters in the district where the candidate is running. Candidates must also pay a $25 fee when the nomination papers are filed. 

If no incumbents runs, the period to nominate any qualified person other than the incumbent is extended to Wednesday, August 17.

The elections will be decided by a plurality vote. The candidates with the most votes will win the seat. There are no run-off contests. More than 50% of the vote is not required to win the election. 

In District 3, Michelle Richardson Bailey is running unopposed. 

 Patrice Marshall McKenzie and Xilian Stammer have qualified for the election. The district is currently represented by Elizabeth Pomeroy, who also has decided not to seek re-election.

The board is guaranteed two new members with Phelps and Pomeroy stepping down.

Voters elect seven Board of Education members by geographic area to serve four-year terms. The duties of the Board include adopting the annual budget, approving all expenditures, establishing district policy, authorizing employment of personnel, approving textbooks and courses of study, and approving new and innovative academic initiatives.

There are about 14,242 students in the district.
