Municipal Services Committee Will Take Up Possible Changes to City Regulations for Screening Transformers, Meters

Pasadena Water and Power will present on Tuesday proposed amendments to city regulations on the proper screening from public view of transformers and meters to improve both aesthetics and ease of access to the equipment.

PWP staff will conduct the presentation at a special online meeting of the City Council’s Municipal Services Committee, which begins at 4 p.m.

In a preliminary report, PWP said the proposed amendments are intended to improve aesthetics and ease accessibility to pad-mounted transformers at single-family residential properties.

Staff will present an information-only overview on what benefits these changes could result in. They will also provide details on the specific guidelines and requirements for screening electric utility meters according to the Pasadena Municipal Code.

Comments gathered at the meeting and other previously help consultations will help PWP finalize the amendments and publish these through the City Manager’s Newsletter, the PWP web page, and the City’s website and social media accounts for at least 30 days before the changes become effective.

PWP expects these amendments to take effect by April, according to the preliminary report.

Regulation 21, now a 38-page document, was first adopted by the PWP through a resolution in 1988. It has undergone at least three revisions since, the last time by a City Council resolution in March 2006.
