Homeless women in Pasadena now have a new place to rest and relax from stress, thanks to a grant from the Pasadena Community Foundation which enabled nonprofit Friends In Deed to renovate a former library area at their building and open a new Nap Room.

The Nap Room, part of Friends In Deed’s ‘The Women’s Room’ program, has been carefully designed to offer a serene environment for their clients, 80% of whom are unhoused.

“Clients come here really needing rest,” Lindsey Reed, Director of The Women’s Room, said. “They often fall asleep right in the chairs because when they are outdoors and on the street, they have to be vigilant, awake, and aware.”

On Facebook last week, Friends In Deed posted:

“Rest and Recharge: Thanks to the Pasadena Community Foundation, we now have a brand new nap room at The Women’s Room! This serene space is equipped with three cozy beds, air purifiers, sound machines, and privacy curtains to provide our guests with a peaceful and rejuvenating rest. We are incredibly grateful for this thoughtful addition, which will make a world of difference in the well-being of those we serve.”

The Women’s Room was founded in 2007 as the only facility in the San Gabriel Valley dedicated to serving women who are alone and experiencing homelessness or at risk of homelessness.

Located at the Friends In Deed House on 444 E. Washington Blvd. in Pasadena, The Women’s Room offers a safe haven where women can access showers, laundry facilities, nutritious meals, computers, telephones, and a space to rest.

The program also includes enriching activities like arts and crafts, field trips, games, and educational opportunities.

The Pasadena Community Foundation is a public charity that empowers the people of Pasadena to make a lasting difference in their community. Since 1953, the Foundation has helped individuals, families, and organizations create and grow philanthropic funds, support local nonprofits, and invest in the future of Pasadena.

Friends In Deed, headquartered in Pasadena, has been serving the community for more than 125 years, meeting the basic human needs of its clients with dignity and compassion. The organization runs several programs, such as a food pantry, bad weather shelter, and homeless prevention.
