No fatalities attributed to the COVID-19 pandemic have been reported in Pasadena for two weeks, as of Friday, while only two new infections were detected, officials said.

Since the start of the pandemic, the city has documented a total of 11,268 cases of COVID-19, officials said. Three-hundred and forty-six Pasadenans have succumbed to the pandemic, with the most recent two deaths reported on April 30, according to city data.

Over the prior week, an average of 2.3 people each day were diagnosed with the virus.

The Los Angeles County Department of Public Health reported 583 new infections and 17 deaths on Friday, raising the county’s pandemic totals to 1,236,988 known infections and 24,074 deaths.

Officials listed 366 COVID-19 patients being treated at county hospitals, with 23% of them being housed in intensive care units.

While federal officials had altered their health recommendations to state that fully vaccinated people no longer wear masks, county and city officials have been awaiting the state to take action before altering their own local policies.

L.A. County Supervisor Kathryn Barger authored a letter to Gov. Gavin Newsom on Friday urging him to do just that.

“Los Angeles County has made tremendous progress vaccinating residents, including those in our hard-hit communities,” she said. “Furthermore, our positivity rate is less than 1% and our case rate remains low. While we still want to keep our communities safe, I am encouraged by the new guidance from the CDC and believe that the State and Los Angeles County should immediately align with the new Federal recommendations.”

The California Department of Public Health listed 2,034 new infections and 66 deaths on Friday, bringing the state totals to 3,661,675 cases of the virus and 61,417 fatalities.

The statewide average positivity rate over the prior week held stable at 1.1%, according to CDPH data.

As of Friday, L.A. County represented 34% of California’s COVID-19 infections and 39% of the state’s deaths.
