No Local Government Public Meetings This Week

City Council and committees ready to return in New Year

No government meetings will be held this week due to the New Year’s holiday.

On Dec. 24, the city announced the cancellation of meetings by the City Council and the council’s Finance Committee, a typical occurrence in Pasadena at this time of year due to the Rose Parade and the Rose Bowl Game.

However, the parade was canceled earlier this year due to COVID-19. Instead, Tournament of Roses officials will be airing a two-hour television special called “The Rose Parade’s New Year Celebration Presented by Honda.”

The show will air Friday at 8 a.m. PST on ABC, The Hallmark Channel, KTLA Channel 5, NBC, and RFD-TV. Coverage on Univision begins at 7 a.m.

The Rose Bowl Game featuring No.1 Alabama and No. 4 Notre Dame was set to be played in Pasadena. However,  on Dec. 18, the College Football Playoff (CFP) group decided they wanted family members of team members to attend, which is not allowed under the state’s stay-at-home orders. The game will now be played at AT&T Stadium in Arlington, Texas. Texas coronavirus rules allow a reduced number of fans to attend sporting events.

It was not known if the name Rose Bowl Game would be used by the CFP in presenting and promoting the game on New Year’s Day. The City Council, which along with the tournament has proprietary rights to the name, met in a special closed session with tournament officials last Tuesday, Dec. 22, but no announcement has been made. State law requires officials to publicly announce decisions made in closed session.

The City Council will resume work in the new year with new committee assignments.

Mayor Victor Gordo has appointed District 1 Councilmember Tyron Hampton to chair the Economic Development & Technology Committee, which meets the third Tuesday of each month.

The mayor has also appointed District 6 Councilmember Steve Madison and District 7 Councilmember Andy Wilson to serve on the committee.

Gordo will chair the Finance Committee, which meets the second and fourth Monday of each month. He has appointed Councilmember Wilson, District 3 Councilmember John J. Kennedy, and new District 2 Councilmember Felicia Williams to join him in serving on that committee.

Madison has been appointed to chair the Legislative Policy Committee, which meets the fourth Tuesday of each month. He will be joined by the mayor and District 4 Councilmember Gene Masuda.

The mayor has appointed Wilson to chair the Municipal Services Committee, which meets the second and fourth Tuesday of each month. Hampton and Williams have also been appointed to serve on that committee.

Gordo will serve as chair of the Public Safety Committee, which meets the first Monday and third Wednesday of each month. Hampton, Kennedy and Madison will be joining Gordo on that committee.
