City and county health officials reported encouraging figures on COVID-19 infections and deaths on Monday, recording only one death countywide, with officials saying it appeared a feared post-Labor Day holiday weekend viral surge had been averted.

Pasadena saw only one new coronavirus infection and no fatalities, according to city data. The city has seen a total of 2,565 infections and 122 deaths since the onset of the pandemic.

Thirty-five new COVID-19 cases had been reported over the prior seven days, data shows. As recently as Aug. 9, the city saw 35 cases reported in a single day.

Huntington Hospital officials reported treating 21 COVID-19 patients on Monday.

The Los Angeles County Department of Public Health recorded a single COVID-19 death on Monday, which was the lowest count seen since March.

County health officials announced 663 new detected infections but cautioned that reported figures tend to be undercounted over weekends.

Nonetheless, L.A. County Director of Public Health Dr. Barbara Ferrer said the county appeared to have avoided a spike in infections as a result of the Labor Day weekend.

“We are now three weeks out from the labor day holiday, and we have not experienced a surge in cases similar to the increases we saw a few weeks ago after both the Memorial Day and July 4 holidays,” Ferrer said.

“While we still may experience increases in cases associated with activities over the Labor Day holiday, we do not predict a similar surge as was seen after Memorial Day and after the July 4 holiday,” Ferrer said.

In all, Los Angeles County had reported 268,455 infections and 6,515 deaths since the start of the pandemic.

There were 689 patients hospitalized with COVID-19 countywide on Monday, with 34 percent of them in intensive care units, the county Department of Public Health said in a written statement.
