Pasadena nonprofit Day One will gather a local panel of community members and experts to talk about gun violence in the community on Friday, which is “National Gun Violence Awareness Day.”
What are the most pressing issues? What are effective strategies to reduce gun violence? And what would you say to someone who’s looking to obtain a gun?
The panel community conversation, which is open to the public, will start at 4 p.m. at Day One, 175 N. Euclid Ave. in Pasadena.
California State Senator Anthony Portantino, Angela Lee, Executive Director from Harambee Ministries, Cindy Montoya, from Moms Demand Action, Florence Annang, from NAACP (National Association for the Advancement of Colored People), and Adrian Vazquez, student and Day One Youth Advocate will headline the panel.
The panel will be moderated by Christy Zamani, Executive Director from Day One.
Together, they will share their experiences and insights on how to manage gun violence and what can be done of an individual level.
A statement from Day One quoted civil rights lawyer Sherrilyn Ifill as saying, “I don’t have a lot of words today, except to say that there is a concerted effort right now to convince you that ‘nothing can be done.’ It is designed to make you give in to the exhaustion of this moment. Don’t believe it. It’s a lie. We have power if we mobilize it.”
Located across from Pasadena City Hall, Day One has 35 years of experience in working alongside residents, young people, elected officials, and other stakeholders to strengthen and build healthy, vibrant communities by advancing public health, advocating for public policies, meaningfully engaging youth, and igniting community-level and behavioral change.
