A protest in response to a Pasadena police fatal shooting turned tense after the police declared the protest an unlawful assembly around midnight on Monday morning.

The vigil near La Pintoresca Park’s eastern edge, running along North Raymond avenue between Grandview Street and Washington Boulevard, had unfolded throughout Sunday.

Police said shortly before midnight tensions escalated and several people hurled rocks and bottles at officers.

Police declared the assembly illegal. One man, identified only as Kevin Senelus, was arrested on suspicion of making criminal threats. One officer was injured but did not need medical attention, according to Pasadena Police Lt. Pete Hettema.

Hettema said police have the people who allegedly threw items at them, but did not arrest them. Cases will be filed against them, according to Hettema.

“They shot me with a bean bag, it didn’t hurt,” an unidentified Black man at the scene told RMG News.

According to Hettema, Pasadena police don’t use bean bags or rubber bullets. But they did fire foam projectiles.

Another man standing nearby said, “Pasadena PD is not for us.”

A man carrying a sign tucked under his chin that read  “Abolish Pasadena Police” slowly approached a line of Pasadena police officers with his arms outstretched as  people nearby screamed at the police “don’t shoot him.”

The incident began after people gathered at La Pintoresca Park for a vigil in honor of Anthony McClain at about 7 p.m.

The protests started yesterday near City Hall and into Old Pasadena where more than 50 people eventually blocked the intersection at Colorado Boulevard and Fair Oaks Avenue before heading to the vigil.

According to authorities, McClain, who was a passenger in a car stopped Saturday night by Pasadena police, did not cooperate during the traffic stop near Raymond Avenue and Grandview, close to the park where the vigil was held.

At some point, McClain allegedly fled from officers, running into the street holding up his pants and pulling a firearm from the waistband, according to police.

An officer shot McClain at least once in the upper torso,” according to police. McClain was transported to Huntington Hospital where he died.

Several people who claimed to have witnessed the event said McClain did not have a weapon.

Pasadena Police Chief John Perez told Pasadena Now on Sunday he planned to release the body worn camera footage of the event this week.
