Pasadena Celebrates Older Americans Month With Free Event at Victory Park

The City of Pasadena will host its third annual celebration of Older Americans Month on Wednesday, May 22 from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. at Victory Park. The free event, organized by the Parks, Recreation and Community Services Department, Senior Commission, and Pasadena Village, aims to highlight the city’s array of resources for older adults.

The celebration will begin with remarks from several public officials, followed by a showcase of resources, giveaways, food, and presentations. Registration, more information, and a list of exhibitors are available on the Pasadena Village website.

The 2024 theme, “Powered by Connection,” highlights the importance of social connections and meaningful relationships in supporting independence and aging in place.

Older Americans Month also serves to raise awareness about elder abuse and neglect.

It is celebrated nationwide in May and led by the Federal Administration for Community Living, traces its history back to 1963. Initially designated as “Senior Citizens Month” by President John F. Kennedy and the National Council of Senior Citizens, the observance evolved to acknowledge the contributions of older persons to the country.

In 1965, President Lyndon B. Johnson signed the Older Americans Act, formally declaring May as Older Americans Month and introducing significant support and federal resources for older Americans. The act established the Administration on Aging, introduced various assistance programs, and paved the way for the Medicare program.
