Pasadena City College Opens News Satellite Campus in Rosemead

The eight-week fall classes for Pasadena City College’s latest satellite campus at Rosemead started Monday, October 21.

PCC Rosemad campus currently has 1,382 enrolled students at 70 percent capacity and 1,970 seats available, PCC spokeswoman Valerie Wardlaw said.  The campus was approved by the PCC Board of Trustees last September and was funded by Gov. Jerry Brown’s budget for community colleges.

The satellite campus opened a month later than the start of classes at the main PCC site on Hill Avenue because the satellite school was only approved by the board in September, PCC Board of Trustees President John Martin told the Pasadena Star-News.

PCC is leasing its Rosemead site for about $325,000 a year, with a minimum of a three-year lease, the newspaper reported.

The usual 16-week courses in the main branch are accelerated and squeezed into 8-week long classes in the satellite campus. Students are attracted to that faster course completion time because it can allow them to get credits needed within a given semester or allow them to transfer sooner to a four-year institution.

The PCC courses offered at Rosemead are accredited by the Accrediting Commission for Community and Junior Colleges of the Western Association of Schools and Colleges and are generally accepted by other colleges and universities.

The enrollment at the satellite campus began last September 30. Classes are open access and are available to U.S. citizens,  but unavailable to international students.

PCC students may also register at Rosemead on a “first-come/first-served” basis.
